Macau Casino Workers To Wear Masks Through March

While many in the gambling world are anxious for a return to the pre-COVID gaming experience, the world’s largest casino market announced that, at least there, it won’t come before spring.

A new measure from Macau’s Health Bureau mandates that casino workers wear masks or face coverings while on the job for another six months. The directive extends the current order to 14 months and will possibly be lifted on March 23.

The original mandate was signed at the end of January and was set to stay in place for eight months, according to Inside Asian Gaming.

Macau casinos have been hit hard by the coronavirus and the restrictions imposed by its government to combat it. Following a 15-day closure of the region’s casino in February, gross gaming revenue has tumbled.

August was the fifth straight month with a more than 90 percent drop in gross gaming revenue and the 11th straight month with a year-over-year decline.

The Chinese government implemented travel restrictions as well, both from the mainland and internationally, into Macau, which further hurt business. Many of those restrictions are slowly being relaxed and the market will likely start to turn around in the coming months.
