  • The Tampa Bay Lightning lead the Dallas Stars 3-1 in the 2020 Stanley Cup final
  • After Tampa Bay’s overtime win in Game 4, the odds to win the best-of-seven series shifted dramatically
  • See how the odds moved, plus injury notes and how the quick turnaround could change lineup decisions

The Tampa Bay Lightning are one win away from capturing the 2020 Stanley Cup.

Kevin Shattenkirk scored a power play goal 6:34 into overtime of Game 4 and now the Dallas Stars must win three straight, starting with Game 5 on Saturday night. Oddsmakers don’t see it happening.

The Stanley Cup odds paint a pretty clear picture. This is an uphill climb for Dallas, especially considering the tight turnaround between games. Here’s a series outlook heading into the next contest.

Less Than 24 Hours Between Games 4 & 5

The NHL was smart to avoid the NFL Sunday slate by scheduling Game 5 on Saturday instead. The only downside is for the players, who will be battling again on less than 24 hours’ rest. Things could have gone worse when Game 4 reached overtime, but it was decided quickly after Jamie Benn’s unnecessary penalty resulted in the game winner.

Momentum is real in playoff series and it’s something the oddsmakers are clearly using as a factor. The Lightning are riding a high and still will be on Saturday night. With a chance to win the Stanley Cup, they will likely be buzzing.

One additional note is the status of Steven Stamkos. He was deemed unfit to play in Game 4 but it’s likely he was simply deemed unfit to play in back-to-back games. With Game 5 being more important than Game 4, it made sense for Tampa Bay to save him. It’s entirely possible Tampa Bay brings, not only momentum to the ice on Saturday night, but their captain as well.

Anton Khudobin Struggling at the Wrong Time

The Lightning have realized that Anton Khudobin can be beaten, and beaten with regularity. He has allowed 13 goals in the last three games, all losses by the Stars. While his hot streak has undoubtedly come to an end, there’s little other option for Dallas moving forward in the series. Regular–season starter Ben Bishop continues to be deemed unfit to play and Jake Oettinger is not a realistic option.

The Stars will sink of swim with Khudobin.

The Stars could help their goalie by staying out of the penalty box. The Lightning scored on three of their four power plays in Game 4, including Shattenkirk’s game winner.

Tampa Bay is lethal enough on offense without being gifted additional opportunities with the extra man. To get back in the series, Dallas will need to win the special teams battle, which starts with staying out of the penalty box.
