This week you’re playing at a major final table as the chip leader. The presence of the short stacks on this table allow you to play wider ranges against the medium stacks due to ICM pressure with big money on the line.
When the 30BB stack opens they should be playing a narrower range than usual when raising first-in from the Cutoff. You can call with a fairly typical Button calling range despite their narrower range because of your postflop ICM edge.
When Villain checks first to act on the flop, you should often be taking stabs at the pot. The Cutoff will simply have to check-fold many hands against you, since continuing may result in you firing all streets and putting them to a decision for their tournament life.
However, keep in mind this opponent is playing well and adjusting their ranges accordingly. If Villain gets to the river against you, they have narrower ranges than they would otherwise. This means that you should actually check back on the river with some seemingly strong hands. The Cutoff simply won’t pay you off with weak hands on the river and we are likely to lose to most hands in their range when called. This means that your range to bet the river will be more polarized, consisting of bluffs and very strong hands.
Straight blockers are also crucial to evaluating both bluff catching ability and your bluffing opportunities. GTO play often dictates picking off bluffs when you hold these blockers, or bluffing yourself if you have the option.
