- Conor McGregor announced his retirement again on Twitter after UFC 250
- Irishman told ESPN he lost his excitement for the sport
- Odds now favor McGregor’s next fight in BKFC – read our prediction below
Conor McGregor surprised many when he tweeted he was retiring from MMA following the conclusion of UFC 250. It is his third retirement in the past four years, but he then spoke to ESPN and saying this is legit as he lost his excitement for the sport.
Although he has retired before, the big question is whether or not this is legit. He has enough money to retire but in late 2019 said 2020 is a season for him where he wants three fights with the final one being for the belt. He also accepted a superfight against Anderson Silva just weeks ago. So, perhaps, the retirement won’t stick but odds favor him not unretiring on Twitter but his next fight to take place in Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship.
Conor McGregor’s Next Fight Odds
Promotion | Odds |
---|---|
BKFC | +125 |
UFC | +150 |
Boxing | +300 |
*All odds taken June 7
Why is BKFC Favored?
There have been rumors for a long time that Conor McGregor will eventually go sans gloves and sign with Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship. The president, David Feldman, has had an interest in the Irishman and have had McGregor’s longtime friend and training partner in Artem Lobov fight for the promotion.
BKFC also has a deal with Paulie Malignaggi, who has a rivalry with McGregor and has wanted to fight him. In the lead up to the McGregor-Mayweather fight, Malignaggi was helping the Irishman train where McGregor leaked training video of him knocking the pro boxer out, which he didn’t like. Since then, he has asked to fight McGregor and ended up fighting Lobov in BKFC, where he hoped it would land him the McGregor fight afterward.
BKFC would be able to put a massive fight in Conor McGregor vs. Paulie Malignaggi if the Irishman goes to that promotion, but the odds of that happening are slim to none.
Where Will he Fight Next?
I really don’t understand the odds, as the UFC should not be plus money and should be favored.
McGregor is under contract with the Las Vegas-based meaning he can not fight for another promotion or do boxing or BKFC without the UFC’s consent. The UFC will also not release McGregor as he is one of the biggest stars in combat sports. So, if McGregor fights again it will be in the UFC.
Pick: UFC (+150)
Conor McGregor Unretires on Twitter in 2020 Odds
Outcome | Odds |
---|---|
No | -300 |
Yes | +200 |
How Many Times Has he Retired?
Conor McGregor has retired three times in the past four years, with all taking place on Twitter. The first came after he was pulled from his UFC 200 fight against Nate Diaz because he wouldn’t fly from Ireland to the States to do a press conference.
He later unretired but then hung up his gloves once again in March of 2019, but would announce his return later that year in a press conference and would fight Donald Cerrone at UFC 246. Then, on June 6, he decided to announce his retirement once again due to the fact he lost his excitement for the sport.

So, just based on prior history, I highly doubt Conor McGregor is truly done as he still has so many fights left in him. The Khabib Nurmagomedov rematch is something he wants and the same goes for the Nate Diaz trilogy.
Will He Unretire on Twitter?
This is the big question and why the odds favor no. I think he will unretire but I don’t expect him to do it on Twitter. I think he will do it in a press conference or an interview with ESPN as he has done in the past.

So, for the odds, no is the best bet as McGregor is not someone who unretires on Twitter instead wants to do in front of a camera, which I expect to be the case again.
Pick: No (-300)
