Mississippi casinos saw the same trend as other casinos reopening throughout the country. Simply put, it’s a trend of pent-up demand among gamblers.
Casinos in the state began opening their doors on May 21, according to AL.com, just a few days before Memorial Day weekend began. Throughout the extended holiday weekend, those casinos reported $28.9 million in gross gaming revenue, according to the Mississippi Gaming Commission.
Those numbers represent a $5 million increase from the same weekend in 2019. The casinos saw that improvement in revenue while operating at 50 percent capacity, with social distancing measurements in place, and with the Beau Rivage, the largest casino in the state, still closed.
Other areas have seen the same rebound in the gaming market as hundreds lined up to play poker in Florida a couple of weeks ago and out-of-town visitors flocked to Deadwood in early May to gamble at the first reopened commercial casinos.
The world’s largest gambling market, Macau, hasn’t seen the same rebound as the majority of the U.S. has. The former Portuguese colony reported a 93 percent drop in gambling revenue last month.
The major gambling hub in the U.S., Las Vegas, will reopen most of its casinos tomorrow morning. Nevada casinos saw a 99 percent year-over-year drop in revenue in April.
