  • Ninth-placed Granada CF will be looking to pick up where they left off when games were halted back in March, having been on a four-game unbeaten run at that point
  • Fifth-placed Getafe resume action with a Champions League berth very much in sight, with Jose Bordalas’s team level on points with fourth-placed Real Sociedad and a point back of Sevilla in third, with 11 games left to play
  • See the odds, analysis and best bet for Friday’s match below

Getafe will need to hit the ground running when their 2019-20 campaign resumes after a three-month pandemic-induced layoff with a contest at Granada’s Nuevo Estadio de Los Cármenes on Friday at 1:30 pm EST. Currently in fifth, Jose Bordalas’s team knows it will need all three points here to improve on its best-ever La Liga finish of fifth last season and qualify for the Champions League.

But Granada will have its own designs on qualifying for European soccer. Sitting in ninth, albeit seven points back of Atletico Madrid in sixth place – and the accompanying qualifying spot for the Europa League that goes along with it – Diego Martinez’s team has been solid in its return to the top flight of Spanish soccer.

Shorthanded Getafe

Though undoubtedly overjoyed that Spanish soccer is back, Getafe will have to overcome an early test of its mettle on Friday. They will travel to Granada missing the talents of Mauro Arambarri, Nemanja Maksimovic and striker Jaime Mata, the team’s second-highest scorer, all of whom are carrying suspensions picked up before the season was suspended.

Consequently, the Madrid club will be relying on their defense once again, just as it has for much of a season where it has posted 12 clean sheets, just one less than Real Madrid’s 13. That rearguard action will be led by Togolese center-back Djene Dakonam, who has missed just two games this season and is attracting attention from some of Europe’s top clubs as a result.

Struggling for Form

Getafe will also be hoping the enforced layoff will have been a good chance for the team to reset.

With points at a premium, the team won just once in its previous four La Liga games, and while losses to leaders Barcelona and third-placed Sevilla are no disgrace, a goalless draw with 17th-placed Celta Vigo is exactly the kind of result Getafe will have to avoid if it hopes to cling to its top-four hopes.

Granada’s Chance to Shine

While the pressure will be firmly on their opponents to hit the ground running, Granada can likely ease back into play. In their first season back in Spain’s top flight, Diego Martinez’s side is 13 points clear of the relegation zone.

But there is still the little matter of the 3-1 loss at Getafe back in October to avenge.

Darwin Dominance

For Granada to avoid slipping back, they will surely need forward Darwin Machis to pick up where he left off in March. When the Spanish league shut down, the Venezuelan forward had been involved in six of the club’s last eight goals, scoring four and setting up two.

In the process, the winger put a poor start following his off-season move from Udinese behind him. Now the challenge will be for him to regain that form, and quickly,  and link up with the likes of Roberto Soldado and Carlos Fernandez to lead the Granada attack. Fellow winger Antonio Puertas, who also has six goals, will miss the game with Getafe through suspension.

The pick: Draw +190
