Estonia’s Ranno Sootla has won the 2020 World Series of Poker Online $400 buy-in no-limit hold’em ‘COLOSSUS’ event for his first gold bracelet and the top prize of $595,930. This is the largest recorded tournament score of Sootla’s career, surpassing the $168,329 he earned as the runner-up finisher in the $1,500 bo-limit hold’em bounty event at the 2018 WSOP.
The event featured a $3,000,000 guarantee, but with 12,747 total entries the final prize pool soared to $4,796,632. The top 1,575 finishers made the money, with a min-cash being worth $840.
Arunas Sapitavicius held the lead when the final table was set, while Sootla coming into the last nine in fourth chip position. Ajay Chabra was the shortest stack at the table with just six big blinds. He managed to find pocket kings early and get all-in against the A-K of Paraskevas Tsokaridis. The kings remained ahead through the flop and turn, but an ace on the river sent Chabra to the virtual rail with $40,529 as the ninth-place finisher. Lai Sisheng followed not long after when their K-10 offsuit failed to win a race against the pocket nines of Andre Figueiredo. Sisheng took home $56,885 for their eighth-place showing.
Tom Delaine’s run in this event came to an end when his A-J ran into the pocket queens of Finland’s Joni Jouhkimainen. The queens held up and Delaine settled for $79,759 as the seventh-place finisher. Agate Ose was the next to fall, getting their last 11 big blinds in preflop with Q
8 against the pocket nines of Tsokaridis. The pocket pair held again and Ose was knocked out in sixth place ($111,890).
Tsokaridis continued his spree of eliminations by busting start-of-day leader Arunas Sapitavicius in fifth place. Tsokaridis opened from the button with A
J suited and called the three-bet shove from Sapitavicius, who held A
3. Tsokaridis made a winning pair of jacks to send his opponent packing with $156,964.
Brazil’s Andre Figueiredo got his last six big blinds in from the button with K4. Jouhkimainen called with 44 and held to eliminate Figueiredo in third place ($220,198). Jouhkimainen climbed into second place on the leaderboard as a result of this hand, but fell to the bottom of the counts as three-handed play continued. He eventually got involved in a preflop battle of the blinds against Tsokaridis. Jouhkimainen limped in for 6 million with A4 from the small blind and Jouhkimainen raised to 19.2 million from the big blind holding AQ. Jouhkimainen three-bet shoved for just shy of 150 million and Tsokaridis called. Both players paired, but Tsokaridis’ queens were best and Jouhkimainen was knocked out in third place ($308,904).
Tsokaridis entered heads-up play with 409 million to Sootla’s 226 million. The two battled back and forth for a while, but by the time the final hand was dealt it was Sootla who had taken a roughly 3.5:1 chip lead. Tsokaridis limped in for 10 million with A9 and Sootla raised to 30 million from the big blind holding KK. Tsokaridis moved all-in for 172 million and Sootla quickly called. The board came down 10
107810 and Sootla’s tens full of kings earned him the pot and the title. Tsokaridis cashed for $433,345 as the runner-up finisher.
