Keuchel Faces Old Foe
The last time Dallas Keuchel faced the Pittsburgh Pirates was in 2012, while he was playing for the Houston Astros — and the Pirates were an NL Central rival.
A lot has changed since then, as the Astros now reside in the American League and Keuchel has changed teams a couple of times. So it makes sense that the Pirates’ current roster has only 14 at-bats against him. It bodes well that he has allowed only two hits (.143 average) to that group.

More important than Keuchel’s history with Pittsburgh is his performance of late. He has pitched at least into the sixth inning in all six of his 2020 starts, sporting a healthy 4-2 record and 2.65 ERA.
His most recent outing was his best, has Keuchel allowed only one run in eight innings en route to earning the win over the Cubs.

Williams Can Hardly Buy a Win
Trevor Williams has an awfully misleading 1-4 record this season. His 3.70 ERA equates to a 122 ERA+ (i.e. 22-percent better than league average), and yet he has been saddled with the loss in 80 percent of his outings.
That’s not fair, but it’s a reality of pitching for the last-place Pirates (7-18) whose impotent offense is truly a headache for the team’s staff.
Williams has allowed no more than three earned runs in any of his starts this year. He has given his team a chance to win, but the Pirates’ hitters haven’t returned the favor. And right now, he could be pitching to impress a potential trade suitor.

On 14 occasions this year, Pittsburgh has scored just three runs or fewer. Facing a team like the White Sox, who have now won eight of nine and scored more than five runs in eight of those games, it’s likely the Pirates will continue to struggle.
