April Showers is the pick of those with previous experience in this maiden, but preference is for the newcomer Madonna, who certainly has plenty going for her on paper. Her pedigree gives every reason for encouragement as a sister to several winners – including the unbeaten two-year-old filly Maybe – and it will be interesting to see if the market speaks in her favour for the Aidan O’Brien yard that has a 20% strike rate at Navan in recent seasons.

Jim Bolger saddles two runners as he seeks a third success in this race since 2016, with Theophile appealing as very much the one to beat if reproducing the form of her fifth at the Curragh in June. Beaten less than two lengths on that occasion, the form is proving very strong with the second and third both winning next-time-out, and it would be folly to rule out more improvement from Theophile, who should have no problem with the testing conditons on pedigree.

Galileo Chrome has improved with each of his three starts, notably showing smart form to land a minor event at Leopardstown last month, just needing to be kept up to his work to win by six lengths. That form sets the standard here on Timeform’s weight-adjusted ratings, and, with further improvement on the cards (especially now stepping up in trip), this looks a good opportunity for him to bring up the hat-trick on the way to bigger and better things.
