DFB-Pokal Quarterfinals Odds and Best Bets

Saarbrucken has heroically advanced to the last eight of the German Cup after defeating second-tier side Karlsruher in penalties back in early February. They won’t face an easy task in order to keep their Cinderella run alive though, meeting Fortuna Dusseldorf in the Quarterfinals.

Dusseldorf is currently 16th in Bundesliga, but have impressed in the DFB-Pokal. However, they haven’t faced any fellow top-flight sides quite yet, having played second and third-tier teams along the way. In the round of 16, Uwe Rosler’s side beat third-division FC Kaiserslautern 5-2.

Dusseldorf shouldn’t have any issue taking out Saarbrucken in the Quarterfinals, however, I don’t see them getting much further after that, considering they will have to play a Bundesliga side of better quality.

Schalke will be looking to turn around their fortunes against league leaders Bayern Munich in the German Cup on Tuesday, having lost to the defending champions 3-0 and 5-0 already this season. David Wagner’s side has won the DFB-Pokal five times in their history, but haven’t lifted the trophy since the 2010-11 season. That year Schalke beat Bayern in the Semifinals, marking the last time they’ve beaten Hansi Flick’s side in this competition. It’s safe to say it’s a long time coming.

Bayern is in immaculate form right now across all competitions, burying Chelsea last week in the Champions League, then destroying Hoffenheim over the weekend by a score of 6-0. Even with leading goal-scorer Robert Lewandowski out with a knee injury, this team is still very capable of bagging lots of goals. Philippe Coutinho added a double on Saturday, while teenage phenom Joshua Zirkzee looks to be a solid replacement for Lewandowski for the time being.

Given Bayern’s recent run of impressive results, I don’t see them having any problem with Schalke on Tuesday.

Pick: Bayern -1,-1.5(-132)

Leverkusen is enjoying a solid campaign, currently fifth in the Bundesliga. They beat Paderborn in the third round of the DFB-Pokal to advance to this point. They’ve lost just once in their last five matches and are in good form heading into this huge match against Union Berlin. They will sorely miss their leading scorer Kevin Volland though who hurt his ankle last week and will be out for three months.

Union Berlin is having a great year after being promoted last season. Urs Fischer’s men are currently 10th in the Bundesliga after playing to a 2-2 draw with Wolfsburg on Sunday. Aside from their great league results, they also find themselves in the thick of a hunt for the German Cup. Along the way, they knocked out fellow Bundesliga side SC Freiburg, while beating fourth-tier FC Verl in the last round.

When these two teams last met on February 15th, Leverkusen beat Berlin 3-2 in a very exciting fixture. I expect this match to be a close one once again, but I do believe that Peter Bosz’s squad will come out victorious.

Pick: Leverkusen -1 (-111)

Frankfurt vs Wolfsburg Odds

Frankfurt has struggled lately in league play, winning just twice in their last five appearances. But on a more positive note, they ran riot on RB Salzburg in Europa League, beating them 6-3 across two legs to advance to the last 16. Goncalo Paciencia has been their most productive player in the final third this term, tallying seven goals and three assists. However, he’s scoreless in three DFB-Pokal fixtures, but that could very well change on Wednesday.

Wolfsburg enters this clash on their high horse, going 3-2-0 in their last five. They’re currently seventh in Germany’s top flight and are heading to last 16 of the Europa League after taking out Swedish side Malmo this week. Wout Weghorst has been brilliant for his side this term, bagging 15 goals across all competitions.

Wolfsburg beat Frankfurt 2-0 in November and given their torrid form right now, Oliver Glasner’s side should advance to the Semifinals.

Pick: Wolfsburg +0.5 (+101)
