Three weeks following a seven-figure daily fantasy sports victory, a reality television contestant had her winnings stripped by DraftKings following an investigation into collusion allegations.
The Boston-based fantasy sports giant announced Saturday that it would be updating the standings from the contest surrounding the Wild Card round of the NFL Playoffs. Jade Roper Tolbert, a former Bachelor contestant, won the match and earned $1 million, but was accused of cheating by many in the fantasy sports community.
Roper Tolbert and her husband Tanner Tolbert, who met on Bachelor in Paradise in 2015, both submitted the maximum 150 entries into the contest. Between the 300 combined entries, there was shockingly little overlap between the entries and none of the rosters shared a quarterback. With just four games deciding the contest, the lack of overlap gave the couple a higher probability of winning.
The collusion accusations came rolling in and runner-up “spckl36” even went as far as to hire an attorney. The investigation that followed uncovered enough evidence that collusion took place, which is a breach of the company’s terms of service.
Ultimately, DraftKings decided to vacate Roper Tolbert of her title and her cash, while moving all other contestants up one spot. “Spckl36” is now listed as the winner of $1 million. It is the first time that DraftKings has ever confiscated a seven-figure first-place prize.
“DraftKings has decided to update the standings for several contests,” the company said in a statement. “All customers affected by the updated standings will be notified directly. It is our general policy not to comment further on such matters.”
Tanner has been a fantasy sports enthusiast for quite some time, but Jade’s interest is much newer. Both halves of the couple have been playing daily fantasy sports since August, but have not even been close to profitable.
According to ESPN Chalk, Jade created her account in August which was immediately restricted by DraftKings for having a “shared payment method with another DraftKings account.” The company requested additional documents in order for her to continue to play.
In the roughly five months both have been playing, the couple is down just shy of $62,000 according to third party data and verified by ESPN.
Aside from adjusting the payouts, it is unknown whether there will be further repercussions for the couple.
