  • The third round of the French Open gets underway tomorrow, Friday, October 2nd
  • Odds have drastically shortened on some players in Quarter 4
  • A few notable players have been knocked out in the early rounds

The 2020 women’s French Open odds have changed quite a bit ahead of round three of the tournament. A few notable names including Serena Williams and Karolina Plíšková have been knocked out of their quarter. Specifically, Petra Kvitova and Elise Mertens have seen their odds shorten drastically compared to their odds after the draw.

2020 French Open Women’s Singles Odds

Player Odds
Simona Halep +180
Garbiñe Muguruza +600
Petra Kvitova +900
Elise Mertens +1400
Elina Svitolina +1400
Jelena Ostapenko +1700
Iga Swiatek +1800
Maria Sakkari +2000
Sofia Kenin +2500

Amanda Anisimova +4000
Aryna Sabalenka +4000
Petra Martic +4500
Tsvetana Pironkova +4500
Caroline Garcia +5000

Odds taken October 1st at DraftKings

Elise Mertens

Mertens entered the tournament with +2500 odds and is now entering the third round with +1400 odds. The 16th seed has yet to drop a set in the first two rounds and has been playing really tight tennis. Playing in Paris hasn’t exactly been favorable to any player, with the fall weather that is consisting of wet and blustery conditions.

Mertens has been one of the most consistent players since the tennis season restarted post lockdown, winning 17 matches. Since the return of tennis, she has made a deep run in every tournament, including a finals appearance at the Prague Open, and a quarterfinal appearance at the US Open.

The Belgian player looks to face France’s unseeded Caroline Garcia tomorrow. Their head-to-head record actually favors Garcia 2-0, with the most recent match being at last year’s Fed Cup. It’s worth noting that their match tomorrow will be their first meeting on a clay court.

Petra Kvitova

No. 7 seed, Kvitova finds her odds shortened dramatically entering the third round of the tournament. Starting the tournament with +2000 odds, she’s now listed at +900. Kvitova took her first two round matches in straight sets, setting a tone for herself this tournament. She is favored to come out of the fourth quarter at +162 odds, but not too far ahead of Jelena Ostapenko at +260.

Her second-round win against Italy’s Jasmine Paolini improved her career record at the French Open to 25-10. She was able to outscore her opponent’s 12 winners with 32 and record 20 break points in the match.

In the third round, Kvitova will be facing 18-year old Canadian Leylah Fernandez. The match will take place on Saturday with the time still to be determined. But with a full day to rest, the third round match should be fairly easy for Kvitova.

Jelena Ostapenko

Jelena Ostapenko’s play in the French Open is also worth mentioning. Her odds have changed drastically. She entered the tournament at +9000 and has shortened to +1700. The 2017 champion knocked out second seed Karolina Pliskova in straight sets when they faced each other in the second round. After defeating the World No. 4, the conversation around Ostapenko quickly turned into 2017. She’s definitely one to keep an eye out for over the next few rounds. She faces Spain’s Paula Badosa Gibert on Saturday in the third round.

Best Bet

It doesn’t seem like any player mentioned above has truly been tested yet this tournament. Despite playing Pliskova, Ostapenko still didn’t seem tested. It’ll be interesting how the third round plays out since no player above seems to have a big match ahead of them.

Obviously Simona Halep and Garbiñe Muguruza will look to win their matches and move on in the tournament, but that’s expected as of now. Halep has been the favorite since the tournament started, and her odds have barely moved.

But I would say there are few dark horses ahead of the third round and the best bet to win the tournament is still Halep.

Best Bet: Halep (+180)
