We review a recent hand from the SuperNova PKO with our friends from The Chip Race where we have a tricky spot with bottom set.
Earlier this month I had a sweat session with the guys from The Chip Race from when I played the SuperNova PKOs on Unibet. I wanted to pick out a few of the more interesting hands for review so here is the first of an abridged series of hand reviews.
This is a hand from the €1 SuperNova Nano, it is early on and we have almost 500BBs effective. Lojack opens to 2BBs, I have 77 in the Hijack and call, the Cutoff calls, the Button (who has been quite loose) raises to 12.7BBs, the Small Blind calls, Big Blind folds, the Lojack folds. I’m getting a good price to call with a hand that can stack somebody so I call and the Cutoff calls.
David Lappin: You are getting a great place to call in a four way pot so an easy call.
The flop is 79T , so I flop bottom set on a draw heavy board. I bet 27.5BBs into a 55BB pot. I would sometimes bet more here but the Button has been very loose aggressive and I could see him coming over the top of me with a lot of hands if I don’t bet much. Do you like the bet size and do you agree with leading out here?
David Lappin: I would go with a bigger sizing here, about 80% pot. There is a very good chance a couple of people here have a piece of this.
Dara O’Kearney: Yes if you want to get your stack in you don’t want to overbet a later street, so if you bet about 12% of the Button’s stack here you can set up a pot sized bet by the river. In normal tournaments I am thinking of bets in terms of the pot, in a PKO I am thinking in terms of stacks to win the bounties. With the board being so wet you’ll always get action, so I would bet about pot. The strong draws are not going to fold, 8x is not going to fold, maybe even top pair is not going to fold.
I like the decision to bet because even a very aggressive player is going to recognise this kind of board doesn’t hit them, so if you check he might not fire. It also puts the Cutoff in a difficult position, if he has a hand now he has to call so you get more money in the pot than if you checked to the Button and he raised.
The Button reraises to 137.5BBs, the Button folds, the Small Blind flats and I am now facing a 110 call in a 357.5BB pot. I obviously am worried about 99, TT and a possible straight here and if this were not a PKO I would actually be thinking of folding here.
David Lappin: If it wasn’t a €1 PKO I’d be giving more thought to this but I don’t think we can fold.
Dara O’Kearney: I’m never folding here, there are too many draws. This is a very different board from say AJ7. Guys will be going mad with draws here and overplaying hands like AT. I’m sticking it in now and we are losing some of the time but I think we are winning some of the time.
I do indeed stick it in and we get called by the Cutoff who flopped the but straight with J8 and the Small Blind who had Q8 . Neither player had a Diamond. We get felted.
