Kudratillo Abdukakhorov was originally scheduled to fight Sergey Lipinets but, visa issues prevented this resulting in Clayton stepping up.

The welterweight division is going through a banner era and a significant victory here could jettison the winner towards a fight with names like Terrence Crawford, Errol Spence, Shawn Porter, and Manny Pacquaio.

Sergey Lipinets’ Return to a World Title

Despite the short notice switch in opponents, Lipinets was able to study tape on Clayton’s pugilistic proclivities.

Lipinets is riding a three-fight win streak heading into this weekend’s contest. The sole loss of his pro career saw Sergey Lipinets drop his IBF super lightweight world title to Mikey Garcia via decision in March 2018.

Lipinets is aiming to taste that IBF world championship glory in a different division, and he has a chance to do that this Saturday.

Custio Clayton’s History-Making Effort

Clayton has a wealth of amateur experience to his credit and was a quarter-finalist during the 2012 Olympics representing Canada.

The unbeaten pro is looking to etch his name into the annals of history. To become the first black Nova Scotian to hold a world championship since the legendary George Dixon whose reign ended in 1900.

Clayton could cement his name as part of a lineage of legendary Black Nova Scotian pugilists that features names like Dixon and Sam Langford. A big legacy move could be made here, and there’s a lot more on the line for Clayton that goes far beyond just a single fight.

Admittedly though, Lipinets has the superior resume overall, and this is a big set up in competition for Clayton.

Both men have 12 stoppage victories as professionals, Clayton has a bit of a size advantage, and Lipinets should have the edge in speed as well as footwork.

Lipinets vs Clayton Tale of the Tape

16-1 Record 18-0
12 Knockouts 12
5’7 Height 5’9
67″ Reach Not Available
Akihiro Kondo, Jayar Inson, Lamont Peterson Significant Wins Stephen Danyo, DeMarcus Corley, Johan Perez
Orthodox Stance Orthodox

In the end, I think there is some underdog value in going with Clayton.

Lipinets will come out looking to throw heavy, but I think Clayton will be able to weather the storm. Clayton should be able to take control of the fight in the middle rounds and eventually secure a decision win.

Pick: Custio Clayton (+200)

Main Card Picks for Lipinets vs Clayton

  1. Malik Hawkins vs Subriel Matias: Hawkins has back-to-back stoppage victories heading into this outing. Matias has a one hundred percent finishing rate but is coming off of his first defeat as a pro. I see Hawkins winning this one via decision. Pick: Malik Hawkins (-290)
  2. Xavier Martinez vs Claudio Marrero: Martinez is unbeaten as a pro and is on a seven-fight streak of stoppage wins.  Marrero has posted up a 500 record across his last four bouts. I ultimately think that Martinez secures the stoppage victory inside seven rounds. Pick: Xavier Martinez (-700)
