We look at the debate around re-entries and whether the online WSOP Main Event is the official ‘Main Event’ in 2020?
The big talking point of the poker week ultimately ended up being a nothing burger, but it revealed what we hold dear in this game. It was heavily rumoured that the GGPoker WSOP Main Event would have 22 starting days and players could enter each one of them, even if they bust the previous.
It turns out it was reported in error, but it didn’t stop everyone getting up in arms about it. Daniel Negreanu confirmed that there would be a lot of starting days, but a maximum of three entries per player.

We’ll never know if the plan was 22 re-entries max and it got walked back after a poor response from the poker public, or just a genuine error in reporting. It showed, however, how the Main Event is sacred and re-entries are still looked upon unfavourably.
A live WSOP looking unlikely
Ironically, had the initial reports suggested that the Main Event would have a maximum of three entries, that might have caused as much initial outcry. But since we all thought it was 22, by comparison the actual tournament seems quite ‘freezeout-y’.
Whether three re-entries is too much I think depends on whether you view this tournament as the official 2020 World Series of Poker Main Event. The WSOPE Main Event, for example, has featured re-entries before. Many consider that tournament and the online Main Event a secondary festival to the real Main Event, so this event doesn’t have the same prestige as the tournament which has been running since 1970.
There is still a live World Series of Poker planned in Autumn and if that takes place, the ‘Main Event’ of that festival is likely to be considered the official 2020 Main Event. However, there is quite a lot standing in its way. Poker currently is short handed only in Las Vegas, travel is restricted and it is starting to look likely that America is poised for pockets of a second lockdown. I would not bet on the Autumn festival happening and if it does, it could look less like the World Series of Poker than the online offering from GGPoker.
No ‘real’ WSOP will happen in 2020
The answer to that question we will only know after GGPoker host the first ever online World Series of Poker Main Event anyway. The reality is that nothing that happens this year is going to be the real World Series of Poker and we should probably manage our expectations accordingly.
Personally I think the GGPoker series would be more special if the Main Event was a pure freezeout, even if that meant reducing the $25 million guarantee by quite a margin. It is, however, exciting to see a relative newcomer to online poker establish itself as a genuine contender to PokerStars in half a year, beating everyone to be the first operator to host an online WSOP festival.
