The defending NFC West champs are in serious trouble. Sitting at the bottom of their division through five weeks, the San Francisco 49ers will face another week of questions about their quarterback situation before hosting the red-hot Los Angeles Rams on Sunday Night Football (8:20 pm ET, Oct. 18).

The Rams opened up as three-point favorites at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, the first time San Francisco has been a home underdog since 2018.

Check back here for the latest movement in the Rams vs 49ers odds.

Is San Francisco Sinking?

Even with all the devastating injuries San Francisco suffered on their defense, there was still optimism about how far this team could go, because Kyle Shanahan is calling the plays on offense. No matter who was under center, the thinking was that the 49ers could still put up points.

A stinker of an effort against the Eagles ended any potential “Nick Mullens should be the starting QB” controversies. But after Jimmy Garoppolo had a miserable return from injury against the Dolphins, the 49ers have to be asking themselves if another switch is needed.

Garoppolo was benched in the second half for C.J. Beathard, but that move was apparently to avoid injury. Jimmy G should still start on Sunday night.

Unfortunately for Shanahan, there’s only so many end arounds and screen passes you can run in a game: San Fran needs a quarterback that can make a throw on third-and-long. Especially if the 49ers defense is going to allow Ryan Fitzpatrick to average 12.5 yards per attempt and hang 43 points on them.

Mired in a two-game losing streak and already 0-1 against the NFC West, next week looks to be a must-win for Kyle Shanahan’s team if they have any hope of making a playoff push in a crowded division.

Rams Keep Rolling

The Rams resounding win over Washington was overshadowed by Alex Smith’s incredible return story, but soon the focus will shift to how well Sean McVay’s team is playing. At FedEx Field, the Rams pass rush was unstoppable, racking up eight sacks on the afternoon.

After a hiccup in New York, the Rams ground game got back on track, rushing for 129 yards and two scores on the day. All told, LA is a well-balanced team that is putting up 27.2 points a game while allowing just 18. In fact, their fans will argue they’re one pass interference call away from being undefeated.

The Rams main weakness is that they’re not very deep beyond their top-level talent. But in a season where so many players are getting hurt, LA has had great luck in the injury department. That continued this afternoon, where no notable names went down with injury.

How Will the Line Move?

After a stinker like San Francisco had against Miami, the initial response should be money on Los Angeles. But knowing how much this game means to the 49ers, I don’t think the number will move beyond three by the end of the week.
