Steelers Slim Favorites

The Steelers (5-0) opened as 1-point favorites over the Titans (5-0), following their 38-7 dismantling of the Cleveland Browns as a three-point favorite at home Sunday.

James Conner ran for 101 yards and a touchdown as the Steelers improved to 5-0 for the first time since 1978 and just the second time in franchise history. Ben Roethlisbeger added 162 yards passing and a touchdown toss to James Washington.

The Browns came into the game on a four-game winning streak. However, Pittsburgh’s defense intercepted Baker Mayfield twice and sacked him four times.

Derrick Henry took a direct snap and ran five yards for a touchdown in overtime to give the Titans a 42-36 victory over the visiting Houston Texans as four-point favorites.

Henry rushed for 212 yards, including a 94-yard TD run, and added 52 yards receiving. The Titans finished with a franchise-record 601 total yards.

One down note for the Titans, though, is that they were burned for 335 yards passing and four touchdown passes by Deshaun Watson.

Bills Double-Digit Choice

The biggest line of the week has the Buffalo Bills favored by 10.5 points on the road against the New York Jets.

The Bills (4-1) host the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday night and are 4-point underdogs. However, there is a wide gulf between the defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs and the hapless Jets.

The Jets fell to 0-6 on Sunday in ignominious fashion as they were shut out 24-0 by the Dolphins at Miami as 8.5-point underdogs. The question now is whether Adam Gase will still be coaching the Jets by the time the weekend rolls around.

The Jets are the league’s only winless team after the Atlanta Falcons and New York Giants won Sunday. It’s been 24 years since the Jets began the 1996 season 0-6.

Plenty of Points Expected

Two games opened with totals of 55.5 points — the Detroit Lions against the Falcons in Atlanta and the Packers versus the Texans in Houston.

Rookie D’Andre Swift rushed for career-high 116 yards and two touchdown to lead the Lions to a 34-16 road victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Lions had lost the last six games in which they built a double-digit lead.

The Falcons’ offense erupted in a 40-23 win over the host Minnesota Vikings in Atlanta’s first game since coach Dan Quinn was fired and replaced by defensive coordinator Raheem Morris.

Matt Ryan threw four touchdowns passes, including two to Julio Jones, and completed 30-of-40 attempts for 371 yards. Jones returned from a hamstring injury to have eight receptions for 137 yards.

While the Packers’ offense was stopped by the Buccaneers, Green Bay is averaging 32.4 points a game. The Texans and Watson’s 36 points against the Titans were a season-high.

Thursday Night Snoozer?

The Thursday night matchup between the New York Giants and Eagles in Philadelphia has the lowest total at 45.5 points.

While the Giants finally got their first win, 20-19 at home against the Washington Football Team, their offense managed only one touchdown. The defense provided the winning score when rookie Tae Crowder returned a fumble 43 yards for a TD in the fourth quarter to snap a 13-13 tie.

The Eagles have lost their last two games but have scored a combined 57 points..

Potential Line Shifts

The Steelers opening as a road favorite in their showdown with the Titans is a little surprising. Look for a fair share of backing on the home team to the point where it is easy seeing Tennessee being the favorite by kickoff.

The Buccaneers opened as 2.5-point road favorites over the Las Vegas Raiders, who had a bye this week. While the public loves betting on Brady, the Raiders should draw a lot of action after upsetting the Chiefs 40-32 on the road in Week 5.
