The NL West favorites meet up with the division’s most promising young team on Monday night ( Aug. 4, 9:10 pm ET) when the Los Angeles Dodgers visit the San Diego Padres for the first of a three-game series.
Dodgers vs Padres Odds
Team | Moneyline | Runline | Total at DraftKings |
---|---|---|---|
Los Angeles Dodgers | -136 | -1.5 (+123) | O 7.5 (-118) |
San Diego Padres | +115 | +1.5 (-148) | U 7.5 (-104) |
Odds taken Aug. 3.
Winners of two straight, LA is the -136 favorite in the Dodgers vs Padres odds. LA will give the ball to 2019 All-Star Walker Buehler for his second start of the season. He will be up against young Padres ace Chris Paddack, who will try to keep his promising start to the season going, as well as snap the Friars’ two-game losing skid.
Dodgers Want More From Buehler
After an uncharacteristically short 2020 debut, the Dodgers will be hoping their Cy Young-caliber right-hander shows up for this contest.

The 26-year-old went 14-4 with a 3.26 ERA in 2020, leading the NL in both complete games (2) and winning percentage (.778).

But in last Tuesday’s 5-2 win over the Houston Astros, Buehler lasted just 3.2 innings. Despite retiring 11 of the first 12 batters, he then allowed three straight to reach and was promptly lifted from the game. He had allowed just three hits, one walk, and struck out three, but gave up a home run to Carlos Correa, who later drove in another run.
Padres Career Stats vs Buehler
Player | AB | HR | RBI | AVG. |
---|---|---|---|---|
Greg Garcia | 5 | 0 | 0 | .200 |
Austin Hedges | 3 | 0 | 0 | .000 |
Manny Machado | 7 | 0 | 0 | .286 |

Josh Naylor | 6 | 0 | 0 | .167 |
Jurickson Profar | 2 | 0 | 0 | .500 |

History is on Buehler’s side when it comes to facing San Diego. In his short MLB career, Buehler is 4-0 against the Padres in four starts, with a 0.64 ERA. On top of that, in his lone start at Petco Park, he not only won, but he didn’t give up a single run over six innings.
Paddack Showing Early-Season Dominance
Paddack’s first two starts of the season have gone very well, overall. After pitching six innings of shutout ball to lead the Padres past Arizona in San Diego’s home opener, he gave up his first two runs of the year in a 7-6 loss on the road at San Francisco.

The right-hander now stands at 1-0 with a 1.64 ERA in just his second season in MLB.

But the Dodgers bring a whole new level of challenge. In three career starts against LA, Paddack is 0-1 with a 5.65 ERA. Only once in those starts did he last into the sixth inning.
Dodgers Career Stats vs Paddack
Player | AB | HR | RBI | AVG. |
---|---|---|---|---|
Austin Barnes | 2 | 0 | 0 | .000 |
Matt Beaty | 3 | 0 | 1 | .667 |

Chris Taylor | 3 | 0 | 1 | .333 |
Justin Turner | 5 | 0 | 0 | .200 |
However, all three of Paddack’s starts were at Dodger Stadium. Monday will mark his first start against Los Angeles at Petco Park.
Dodger Dominance
Los Angeles has dominated this matchup in recent years, going a combined 40-17 against the Padres the last three seasons.
The last ten games paint an even worse picture. San Diego is just 2-8 and has lost five straight. And that was when LA was without the likes of former AL MVP Mookie Betts, who connected on his second home run in Dodger blue in Sunday’s shutout win over the Diamondbacks, and is now on a seven-game hitting streak.

However, Betts also injured his finger taking an awkward swing in the fifth inning of that game, and is now listed as “day to day,” according to LA manager Dave Roberts. With Paddack on the mound at home, I’m taking the Padres as solid plus-money.
Pick: Padres (+115); +1.5 (-148)
