Oregon’s only online sports betting app was the target of a cyberattack earlier this week.
Scoreboard, the app which is run by the Oregon Lottery, was hacked and forced to temporarily pause the software. SBTech, an outside company that runs the software for the app, made the call to press the pause button as a preventative response against a deeper breach.
With the absence of any major sports to bet on, the breach was likely an attempt to gain access to funds still in accounts.
According to an email sent out to its users, both the money and personal data on the app were not compromised.
“[SBTech] brought its systems offline as a precautionary measure in response to a cyberattack – suspending play on Scoreboard and other online sportsbooks using the platform,” read the email sent out on March 30. “We have no reports of unauthorized disclosure or extraction of player data or account balances.”
According to Williamette Week, a local weekly newspaper, the Oregon Lottery announced in a presentation earlier this year that the app was actually losing money since it launched last October and with American sports on hold, it’s unlikely to turn around anytime soon.
To date, Oregon sports betting operators as a whole have only generated just shy of $6 million in revenue. The entire figure is coming from brick-and-mortar locations, which began opening last August at Chinook Winds Casino.
